Frequently asked questions about JAGUAR Solingen our professional tools
What distinguishes JAGUAR scissors from other brands?
What scissor lines are available at JAGUAR?
Which pair of haircutting scissors is right for you?
The right pair of hairdressing scissors depends on your hand, your preferred cutting technique, and your daily work routine. Pay special attention to size, handedness, handle shape, and blade type. You can then use the JAGUAR product lines to narrow down your options based on materials, features, and price range.
What size is right for you?
The scissor size is specified in inches. Depending on the model, JAGUAR offers sizes ranging from 5.0 to 7.0 inches.
For reference:
- 5.0 to 5.5 inches: easy to control for detailed work, outlines, and precise cuts
- 5.5 to 6.0 inches: versatile sizes for many classic cutting techniques
- 6.5 to 7.0 inches: longer blades for larger sections of hair, long cutting lines, and cutting over the comb
The size of your hand is just as important as the technique. The scissors should open all the way without requiring you to stretch your thumb or fingers too much. If you're torn between two sizes, the JAGUAR Scissors Finder can help you make your choice.
Scissors for right- or left-handed people?
Left-handed people should use scissors designed specifically for left-handed use. On these models, the blades and handle arrangement are mirrored. This keeps the cutting line visible and preserves the natural direction of movement of the left hand.
You can find all the models that fit in the Collection Hairdressing Scissors for Left-Handers.
Which grip is the right one?
The shape of the handle affects the strain placed on the hand, arm, and shoulder during cutting.
- Classic: The two blade eyes are largely symmetrical. This shape provides a traditional, balanced cutting feel.
- Offset: The thumb hole is offset toward the front. This means the hand doesn't have to open as wide when cutting and can remain in a more relaxed position.
- Crane: The thumb rest is positioned lower. This design promotes a natural hand and arm posture, especially during longer work shifts.
- Adjustable thumb rest: Some models adapt more closely to the movement of the thumb. This can be comfortable when cutting at varying angles and during long workdays.
Which shape feels right depends on your hand position and your working style. The product pages show the respective grip shape right next to the technical specifications.
Micro-serrated or polished cutting edge?
A micro-serrated blade grips the hair as the scissors close. This prevents the hair from slipping out of the blade as easily. This design is particularly well-suited for controlled basic cuts, clean lines, and precise work.
A polished cutting edge glides more easily through the hair. It is well-suited for fluid techniques such as slicing and sliding cuts. Models with convex or semi-convex blades, a hollow grind, and honing provide particularly good conditions for these techniques.
Some JAGUAR lines include both versions. Therefore, in addition to checking the product line, always check the blade specifications for each individual model.
Which cutting technique do you use most often?
For classic basic cuts and clean lines, micro-serrated and polished blades are ideal. When slicing and using fluid techniques, the blade should glide smoothly through the hair. For precise thinning and soft transitions, there are specialized styling and thinning shears.
If you use multiple techniques on a regular basis, either choose a versatile pair of scissors or use two specialized pairs.
What role does steel play?
The type of steel, the hardening process, the blade shape, and the grind all work together to determine how sharp, durable, and smooth-cutting a pair of scissors is. Therefore, the steel grade alone is not sufficient for making a selection.
Depending on the product line, JAGUAR uses, among other materials, SOLINOX54, SOLINOX58, VG10 cobalt steel, and MICRO-CARBIDE steel. The following table shows how the five scissor lines can be categorized.
